Founded in 1999, La Cetra Barockorchester Basel is composed of highly specialised musicians, most of them graduates from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the school which trains the Swiss early music“elite”.With La Cetra, an ensemble hit the international stage which soondemonstrated that it deserved a place among the top orchestras of historically informed practice.Successes at major international festivals and a swathe of radio and CD productions are cogent proof of the dynamic rise of this young orchestra.For the performance of the serenata Il Parmasso in festafor soloists, chorus and orchestra, which Handel wrote for the wedding celebrations of the British princess royal, Anne, the daughter of King George II, to Prince William of Orange in 1734, this orchestra will be working with leading international singers from the world of Baroque music.The music director is Andrea Marcon, who has directed Baroque operas by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel and others at leading opera houses and festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, and who has moreover initiated famous symphonic orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic,into the performancestylepeculiar to Baroque music.In 2014, he will not only be appearing at the Handel Festival in Halle, but will also be making his debut at the renowned Festival d’Aix-en-Provence where he will be conducting a new opera production.
